I use Nova Launcher and then press and hold the topmost widget on the home screen and resize it to gain back the space and move the widget where the google search was. If you want to get the most out of your Android homescreen simply go to the Play Store and download the launcher you like most. A launcher is, basically, an app that lets you change the way your homescreen looks and how you interact with it. After stopping a small disabled widget might still be there. You may need to restart the device to see it gone. You cannot remove it from the stock launcher, you could install a 3rd party launcher from the Play store. Something like Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher, Holo Launcher, Action Launcher etc etc...

Scroll the screen sideways to the "All" column (past the "Running column) and you will find Google Search or just Search hiding somewhere. Remember what you are disabling so that you can restore it if it was the wrong app.
The only solution is to install a 3rd party launcher. Google has messed with this and now there IS no ‘google search’ in the apps TO disable. So I guess the last remaining option is a new home screen launcher.

Also, it can always be moved to another screen. A rooted Android is almost infinitely customizable, and once you’ve rooted your device, almost any custom ROM will let you uninstall the Google Search app. We've written a complete guide to rooting, which will tell you not just how to do it, but how to do it as safely as possible. Yeah that's what i'm used to doing on a couple of previous android devices as well.

Another way to remove the Google search bar is to use a custom launcher. You can also make other changes to the layout and icons of your device using a custom launcher. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but figured I’d share what I did for mine (I’m on Android 4.4.2). It was much simpler, and so far it didn’t cause me any problems. Enable Developer Options, go to ‘Select runtime’, and change to ART . This also helps optimize your runtime, and battery life, I heard.

The Launcher is a combination of activities on your tablet, the homescreen and app tray being too two primary parts. I won’t recommend this to people who have no idea what a Developer Options is for, though. And please note that I am not suggesting that this is the best option. Don’t disable Google Search on the Nexus 5 with stock Android!!!!
